Yep, knock sensors on engines with mechanical (solid) valve train typically don't work well, or too well depending on your perspective. lol
When you want to start pushing the engine, do so with conservative values and sneak up on the end values, by listening for any sounds that are not good, knock, sound of straining to rev, backfiring, etc and feel for when power drops off, along with what sensors and gauges are telling you. If any of this occurs, you've gone too far and need to back up a bit.
