  • 2013 Calabogie Tour Pics

So here we go again... What a fantastic tour it was. My second time around, and it will always be a fixture in my season. Awesome company, great locations, lodging food, wine, drinks, stories, partying... oh did I forget to mention the amazing roads? Oh yeah... driving was fun, specially on the Desert Lake Road... too bad some of the cars had to drop out as this was towards the end of the tour. I will have a full report on the Christmas edition of the ZEDLINE, as I am working on the Fall issue right now.

But for now here are the pics from this great event... Click on the link below and ENJOY!

Great photos Raji, thanks for starting this thread. Please you the following paragraphs for the Zedline story:

This was my first time taking part in the annual Calabougie tour and it was quite the epic adventure! Everyone who has done it in the past has raved about how great the roads are in this isolated north eastern part of the province. I have declined participating in the past because it's a full weekend away from my family responsibilities and more driving than I like to do. Knowing that, Erle invited me to be his passenger and help drive his Green Machine!

The tour did not disappoint and everything went smooth and according to plan. Erle and Wes are seasoned veterans at planning this tour and modify it every year to explore new roads and keep the favourites. The best roads were Elephant Lake Road, Siberia, Schutt, Matawatchan and the exhilarating Desert Lake Road. Most of the roads were in good condition but we did hit a few unexpected rough spots with gravel but we persevered through.

We had a great group, 13 cars including a Corvette, BMW M3 and Porsche Cayman S. Eric, as always, impressed me with his driving by keeping up with his 240Z, by far the oldest and least powerful car in the group. I enjoyed driving Erle's Green Machine and helping Wes navigate as he was the leader for most of the tour.

The Ash Grove Inn was a nice motel and suitable for our needs - providing a relaxing and social night in a beautiful setting. Thank you to Erle and Wes for organizing this tour and Peter for picking me up and dropping me off at home to make this weekend getaway enjoyable and care free.

There are some photo highlights. I should mention that I was embarrassed to have forgotten my Nikon SLR camera as I'm known for being the photographer in the group. I took these shots with my iphone and am please to say that it takes a pretty good photo for a cell phone.

When was this tour? I guess I missed the heads up on this tour, too bad The coffee/ice cream shop in the last pic is less than 1 km from my house.

This tour was this past weekend. It was on the events calendar on the website and Zedline but not promoted beyond that because there were already 13 cars signed up so that's enough of a group to keep together during a tour of this magnitude. Some tours are simple so we encourage lots of participation. This tour is very long (1000 km) and a big commitment of time (2 days with an overnight stay) and money so when a certain number of committed cars is reached, it is not promoted beyond that.

brews280, so this means you live close to the Desert Lake Road, which we sampled right after this break at the coffee shop. As Rockdog mentioned it wasn't promoted extensively due to the commitment/expense issues, BUT if you live 1km away from there, you could have joined us for that exciting ending... Have you ever tried the Desert Lake Road? We had a hair raising experience through the winding, wooded stretch with multiple elevation changes... It was pure adrenaline rush!!!!

And the pictures look eerily similar to previous years. Same group of cars too. So what does it take to break into this elite group? I'm sorry but this reply sounds what one would expect from a snobby Porsche or Ferrari club.

nobody was declined or discouraged to join the tour. Anyone could have know about it as it was published in Zedline and on the website calendar. It was also on the forum landing page as text only, under upcoming events. Erle is the main organizer of this tour so contact him if you want to go next year...

A lot of the same members go every year as they know to expect it but others are welcome...

Hey I'm just pulling your chain a little. Just with a mention of time, money and we had our group already...it comes across as snobby.

Yup I have been on those roads and up in Calabogie at the dam, unfortunatly not with the 280zx, at least not yet. I would have loved to join up for the day, since you guys almost litterally drove past my front door. I haven't been on the forum much lately so It's my bad for missing it. I didn't intend to come off mad or upset about missing it or intend to cause any hard feelings with my post, if I did. Next time I would love to meet up and go for a drive with you guys. Maybe I know a few "good" roads I can show you as well.

People were discouraged to come, just by lack of promotion of the event until literally days before when I saw something on Facebook. Now it feels like a repeat with the Muskoka Tour as it approaches just a couple weeks from now and the only reason I know about it is someone asked for details on the forum. :/

                          Great Tour,
As with all great events its about the people, the weather and the food. The cars worked well, the roads were spectacular, and the colours......well they just wouldn't quit. The lunch at the locks! Erle in his finest hour......Raj et al with the camera.
Thanks to all for a terrific weekend. If you missed it...there'll be others.
For us it was a 4 day tour which made it a fine getaway.

^^The way the tours work is a small group of us make up the tour planning committee, which is different from the executive committee. We meet in March to plan the tours and set dates. Everyone takes the lead for a tour to spread out the duties. It's each tour leaders responsibility to plan the route, itinerary and promote the event. My tour tends to be Halton Hills, the first of the year. I promote it on the forum, at monthly meetings and by mass-email to OZC members.

It's unfortunate that not everyone knew about the Calabougie Tour well in advance but there were limited lodging accommodations in the isolated northern region were we stayed so to have more people on this tour would have complicated things. Infact one of the guys bailed on the first day because he called around and couldn't find a hotel as the one were stayed at was sold out. This tour can be better promoted next year and perhaps a larger motel can be chosen.

Brews, it's a nice 4 hour run on Hwy 7 to my cottage from your place, I just did it after the Calabogie tour. Maybe you should join us on the 19th.
